Studying in Bangkok

Hello!

This week I'm going to focus on describing the sights and sounds of Bangkok. For starters, Bangkok is a huge city, so naturally, it is very noisy and busy. The days start early in Bangkok because everyone is rushing to work and the street food vendors are busy getting ready for the day.

When I was jet-lagged at the beginning of the semester and woke up at four in the morning, I used to go to my balcony and just watch the skyline. I can see a highway from my balcony, and at four or five in the morning was when the highway became busy with cars. People in Bangkok start their days very early.

Usually, when my friends and I leave campus to go explore, we always see a lot of people out and about, no matter the time of the day. However, the streets usually get more crowded in the afternoon/night, when most people get off work. Usually the food stands and markets are full of people by this hour.

The streets of Bangkok specifically are always chaos, there are always hundreds of cars and taxis and motorbikes trying to get places. the motorbikes are especially chaotic, they are are always speeding and weaving through the cars in an attempt to avoid the traffic. What I hate the most is when the motorbikes get on the sidewalk, I feel like they should only be allowed to be in the street or the sidewalk (preferably the street), not both.

One good (and honestly bad) thing about Bangkok, is that there is food EVERYWHERE. The streets are littered with either food stalls, or restaurants, or cafes. Due to this, it smells like food almost anywhere you go. Especially since the street food is in open-air, every time you pass by a food stall it smells good.

The food stalls that smell the best are usually the ones selling fried chicken, or pork, or duck, and rice. There are so many different food stalls in Bangkok, they sell many different things such as salads, chicken, pork, rice, pastries, and many other things.

Unfortunately, all of Bangkok doesn't just smell like food. Since Bangkok is such a huge, developing city, it also has a lot and I mean a lot, of pollution. Since Bangkok doesn't have a pick-up trash system, people literally just throw trash on the streets.

Also, Bangkok is near a body of water, so it has a lot of canals and small bodies of water. However, the water is so incredibly polluted that it smells bad if you pass by it. The water itself is a murky grayish/greenish color, and it is also full of trash.

Near our university, is the national stadium for soccer. That whole area has a lot of places to workout in, there is a track, there are basketball courts, soccer courts, and even archery targets. Even though I have never gone into the stadium, I have seen announcements for ping-pong matches that occur in the stadium. I always find this very interesting since ping-pong isn't a huge sport in the U.S, but here it seems popular.
