FRIED CHICKEN WITH YELLOW CURRY AND RICE!!

Hello!

This week I am excited to talk about my favorite food which I have tried so far here in Bangkok. For starters, a food which I would eat every day if I could is fried chicken with yellow curry and rice! Now I know what you might think, why curry? Even though I personally don't know much about the origin of curry, I usually think about Indian food whenever someone mentions curry.

If you are the same way, you might be wondering why I am eating curry in Thailand. Well, for whatever reason, curry is actually super popular in Thailand. You can find curry and chicken in almost every menu of Thai food. After doing some research, I found that Thailand actually has its own set of "Thai curries." There is green curry, red curry, and yellow curry, these three are the most popular kind of curries in Thailand. The difference between them is the core ingredients that make the curry its color.

I'm not too sure how original curry is supposed to taste like, but the curry here in Thailand is more sweet than salty or spicy. I am so grateful that the yellow curry here is not spicy at all. I don't know much about curry at all, but I think there's different colored curry with different savory tastes.

The first time I had chicken with curry was in this restaurant near our campus called "Coconuts." The funny thing is that this dish is so popular with Loyola students that it is known as "number five" (because it is the fifth dish on the menu), and Fon (the owner) has kept the dish on the menu for years because of its popularity with Loyola students.

I haven't had chicken with yellow curry in Coconuts for a while, so I honestly don't really remember what the meal looks like. I do remember, however, that the meal included white rice and pieces of fried chicken, and then the yellow curry in a bowl. Compared to other yellow curries, I remember Coconut's curry to be a bit more on the dense/chunky side, which I loved!

Now, however, I usually eat fried chicken with yellow curry and rice in this other place called "Oscar," funnily enough, Oscar is on the street on the other side of the campus. Coconuts vs. Oscar, who will win? Now the reason why I go to Oscar for a curry now is because they give you more for the same price, 60 baht ($2). In Oscar, they give you a bigger piece of fried chicken, and also a lot more rice, and most importantly, they also give you a way bigger bowl of curry than in Coconuts.

Oscar's dish for example also has cabbage under the chicken which adds more variety of flavor. Also, the bowl of curry which they give you has additional pieces of chicken in the curry, Coconuts dish just had the curry in the bowl.

Now what I love about Oscar curry, is that the fried chicken is just so deliciously crunchy. In my opinion, the crunchy chicken is one of the best things about the dish. While the curry itself is also delicious and has amazing flavor, it has more of a watery texture, which I kind of dislike. I personally prefer the texture of the curry in Coconuts more, even though at this point I don't really remember what it tastes like.

Even though fried chicken with yellow curry sounds like a pretty basic dish compared to all the other strange and wonderful things that Bangkok has to offer, I personally am a simple girl who enjoys simple dishes. I am excited, however, to keep exploring and maybe find another new favorite dish.
